Biscayne National Park from Miami: With or Without a Boat

By VisitMiami.city EditorialPublished 6 min read

Biscayne National Park is a worthwhile change of pace from Miami's beaches and city neighborhoods, but it needs a different kind of planning. About 95% of the park is water. Driving to the visitor center gives you a shoreline visit, not a road through the islands or a view of the offshore reefs.

Start by deciding whether you want a short visit on land, a sightseeing boat trip or an in-water activity. That choice determines where you should go and how much of the day to leave free. The National Park Service's planning guide is the best starting point.

Quick Answer

  • Without a boat: visit the Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Convoy Point, explore the exhibits and take the jetty walk.
  • For islands and reef experiences: book a suitable boat-based excursion in advance and confirm exactly where it departs.
  • Without a rental car: compare a Coconut Grove departure with the logistics of reaching Homestead. They are not interchangeable meeting points.
  • For a low-cost visit: park entry is free, but boat tours and some other activities have separate charges.
  • What You Can See Without a Boat

The Dante Fascell Visitor Center is at 9700 SW 328th Street in Homestead, at the park's mainland Convoy Point area. Its museum, films and art gallery introduce the park's marine environments. This is a good way to learn what lies beyond the shoreline before deciding whether to book a longer water-based visit. Check NPS visitor-center information for current hours.

Outside, the Convoy Point Jetty Walk is a 0.8-mile round trip from the compass-rose starting point. The NPS self-guided walk explains what to look for along the route. Bring water and take your time rather than treating it as a race to the end.

A visitor-center stop, a walk and a picnic make a sensible land-based outing. Allow additional time for the drive from your hotel, and do not expect this visit to substitute for snorkeling or an island trip. Families can ask about Junior Ranger activities at the visitor center.

When a Boat Trip Is Worth Booking

A boat-based excursion makes sense when your priority is reaching islands, learning about the bay from the water, or snorkeling. The NPS lists the Biscayne National Park Institute and other authorized operators on its guided-tours page, and recommends advance reservations.

Choose by activity rather than selecting the first departure with an appealing photograph:

  • Sightseeing or heritage cruise: consider this if you want to experience the park from a boat without committing to snorkeling.
  • Snorkeling excursion: check swimming expectations, minimum ages, equipment and how the operator chooses its sites.
  • Paddling or a combined outing: check the physical demands and how much of the program is spent traveling versus doing the activity.
  • The Institute's current trip listings show different options and departure points. Read the description for the exact trip you are considering. Do not assume that every cruise visits the same island, that every snorkel trip reaches an offshore reef, or that a child qualifies for every activity.

Check the Departure Point Before Arranging Transport

The Institute operates from Dante Fascell Visitor Center in Homestead, Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove, and Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay. Your confirmation identifies the right meeting place. A booking described as a Biscayne trip does not necessarily start at the national park's visitor center.

For visitors staying in central Miami, comparing a Coconut Grove departure may save a separate journey to Homestead. Choose the activity first, then compare the door-to-door transport needed to reach its meeting point.

The Institute warns that rideshare pickups at Dante Fascell Visitor Center can be unreliable and recommends arranging the return in advance. Review its transport and check-in guidance before choosing a no-car plan. Do not count on requesting a car at the end of the day without a backup.

Do Not Assume the Homestead Trolley Runs Year-Round

Homestead offers a seasonal national-parks trolley, but you must verify that your date is included. At this guide's October 2026 review, the city's posted regular season ran January 3 through April 5, 2026, with weekend service. That does not establish a schedule for your upcoming winter trip.

Check the official Homestead trolley page for newly announced dates, reservations and return times before relying on it. You also need to plan how to reach the Homestead boarding point from your Miami hotel.

Entry Fees, Tour Costs and Booking Details

Biscayne National Park has no entrance fee. Boat excursions are separate paid services, and the park also has fees for activities such as certain docking and camping uses. A free-entry park does not mean a free boat ride. See NPS fees and passes.

Before paying for a tour, check the full price, check-in time, cancellation rules and any equipment charges. Decide whether you can comfortably reach the meeting point with time to spare. Avoid placing a boat trip immediately before a flight, cruise boarding or another booking you cannot move.

    Weather and What to Bring

Biscayne's summer weather is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms; winter can bring windy fronts. Check NPS weather guidance, current park alerts and the operator's message before leaving. A pleasant forecast at your hotel does not guarantee suitable conditions on the water.

Pack water, sun protection, a hat and a small waterproof bag for essentials. For a full-day outing, check whether you need to bring lunch. Wear clothes and footwear appropriate to the activity, and leave large luggage at your accommodation. Follow crew instructions and avoid touching wildlife or coral. Review the park safety guidance before an on-water outing.

Accessibility: Ask About the Exact Route and Boat

NPS describes ramp and elevator access at the visitor center. The jetty route includes boardwalk and a natural-surface section, which can be affected by rain. Island paths and boats have different conditions, so do not assume that visitor-center access means every excursion is equally accessible.

Use the park's accessibility guide, then confirm your needs with the operator for the specific boat, boarding arrangement and island stop before booking.

A Simple Way to Choose Your Day

Choose the land-based visit if you want a flexible, lower-cost introduction and can arrange a dependable round trip to Homestead.

Choose a boat excursion if the islands, bay or underwater environment are the reason for going. Reserve the right activity, leave the rest of the day relatively open and build your transport around its departure point.
