Miami on a Budget: 50 Free & Cheap Things to Do

Mar 5, 20263 min read

Miami has a reputation as an expensive city, but locals know better. Here's how to experience the best of Miami without breaking the bank.

🏖️ Free Beaches

Every Miami beach is free to access. South Beach, Crandon Park ($5 parking but free entry), North Beach, Surfside, and Haulover are all public. Bring your own umbrella and towels to avoid rental fees. Street parking is free in many residential areas near beaches — just read the signs carefully.

🎨 Free Art & Culture

Wynwood Walls charges $12 admission, but the surrounding streets of Wynwood are covered in world-class murals — completely free. Walk the neighborhood for hours. Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is free on the first Thursday of every month and every First Friday evening. The Bass Museum in Miami Beach offers free admission on the first Sunday of each month.

🇨🇺 Little Havana for Cheap

Walking Calle Ocho costs nothing and is one of Miami's best experiences. A cafecito (Cuban espresso) costs $1-2. Watching domino players at Maximo Gomez Park is free. Fresh fruit from street vendors costs $3-5. You can eat a full Cuban meal at many Little Havana restaurants for under $12.

🌳 Free Outdoor Activities

  • South Pointe Park — stunning views of Government Cut and Fisher Island, free
  • Barnacle Historic State Park in Coconut Grove — $2 entry, kayak the mangroves
  • Oleta River State Park in North Miami — $6 per vehicle, miles of mountain bike trails and kayak trails
  • Miami Beach Boardwalk — walk or bike from 23rd Street to 46th Street for free
  • Bayfront Park downtown — free concerts and yoga classes on the waterfront
  • 🍽️ Budget Food

Skip the tourist restaurants and eat where locals eat. Cuban ventanitas (walk-up windows) serve meals for $6-10. Taco trucks along Tamiami Trail are $2-3 per taco. Publix subs are a Florida institution — a whole sub for $8-10. Happy hour deals in Brickell and Wynwood can get you half-price appetizers and $5-7 drinks.

    🚌 Free Transportation

The Metromover is a free elevated train that loops through downtown and Brickell with great views. The Trolley system runs free routes through several neighborhoods including Brickell, Coral Gables, and Coconut Grove.

💰 Budget daily estimate: You can do Miami for $50-75/day (not counting lodging) if you eat at local spots, use free transportation, and stick to free beaches and attractions.
